‘The Reel’ Essay

The reel is a concept created by Mk Asante to explain hyper violent and hyper sexual content in new age        hip-hop. According to Asante previous hip-hop was ‘real’ because it talked about socially aware content and things that were realistic in the black community. Now, however, he calls the new age hip-hop community. ‘Reel’ because it is almost like a show reel used in a movie or for entertainment. To truly understand how this happened,we need to look at another therapist : Flores(1998). According to Flores,70% of hip-hop is bought by white consumers this relevant because,as we know, hip-hop started out as a socially aware art form but as bigger companies took notice of a growing consumer base, they began to flood money into it. According to Flores, when consumers from white suburbia listen to hyper violent lyrics they feel as if they are experiencing black culture. However, Asante tells us that these lyrics are only used for entertainment and for the hip-hop industry to make money.

Kendrick Lamar – the blacker the berry

Criticizing the reel?

(Who is he?)

Kendrick Lamar came from humble roots in the streets of Compton. He grew up in a very violent area were there was constant war between two gangs known as the bloods and crips of which he had family in both. There was only really two options in life for him, to follow the gang culture and stay in the box or work his way out of his situation. At the age of just 14 he began to take his music a lot seriously and to do this he would study great rappers and mc’s of the past such as Snoop Dog,2pac,Nas,the notorious b.i,g and etc. Kendrick would begin his career under the name K.dot and would perform locally in Compton and his talent would be taken notice of by music label top dawg ent when dropped his first mixtape. At this stage of lamars career he would change his performance name k.dot to his government name Kendrick Lamar. His socially aware rap was quickly noticed by people in the hip-hop community as it reminded some fans of the pre-era rap group N.W.A who also made ‘socially aware’ rap in which they would criticizes police brutality ,racism towards black people and the ‘reel’. It wasn’t only Kendricks rap that that reminded people of N.W.A but also that they both originated from the streets of Compton trying get the same message out to the world. The two songs that correlate the most for Kendrick and N.W.A is ‘The Blacker The Berry’ and ‘Straight Outta Compton’.

Through out the song Kendrick talks about socially aware subjects such as racism and attempts to terminate black culture for example

  • “My hair is nappy, my dick is big, my nose is round and wide you hate me don’t you?”
  • “You hate my people, your plan is to terminate my culture you’re fucking evil i want you to recognize that am proud monkey ,you vandalize my perception but cant take style from me.”

After addressing some socially aware subjects and racism towards black people, he then begins to talk about being a proud black person in the pre hook

Nas – one love

Criticising the reel?

(who is he?)

As a teenager, Nas enlisted his best friend and upstairs neighbour Willy “Ill Will” Graham as his DJ. Nas initially went by the nickname Kid Wave before adopting his more commonly known alias of Nasty Nas. In the late 1980s, he met up with the producer Large Professor and went to the studio where Rakim and Koop G Rap were recording their albums. When they were not in the studio, Nas would go into the booth and record his own material. However, none of it was ever released. In 1991, Nas performed on Main Source’s “Live at the Barbeque”. In mid-1992, Nas was approached by MC Serch of 3rd Bass, who became his manager and secured Nas a record deal with Columbia Records the same year. Nas made his solo debut under the name of “Nasty Nas” on the single “Halftime” from Serch’s soundtrack for the film Zebrahead. Called the new Rakim, his rhyming skills attracted a significant amount of attention within the hip-hop community. In 1994, Nas’s debut album, Illmatic, was finally released. It was awarded Five Mics from The Source. It also featured production from Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, L.E.S. and DJ Premier, as well as guest appearances from Nas’s friend AZ and his father Olu Dara. The album spawned several singles, including “The World Is Yours”, “It Ain’t Hard to Tell”, and “One Love”. Shaheem Reid of MTV News called Illmatic “the first classic LP” of 1994.In 1994, Nas also recorded the song “One on One” for the soundtrack to the film Street Fighter. In his book To the Break of Dawn: A Freestyle on the Hip Hop Aesthetic, William Jelani Cobb writes of Nas’s impact at the time:

Paradise in Hell

Paradise in Hell

If it wasn’t that we were outside up to no good or at home rapping and watching channel u instead of working my ma was always lecturing me and my brothers about something, while the only other girl in the house my angel sister would stand beside my ma as if she was her lawyer, making a scene every time we answered back, loud enough for the whole block to hear and speaking for me and my brothers most things went in one ear and came out the other.

At the time I was just ten and anything I saw my two brothers do (one being 14 and the other 16) was the right thing in my eyes. I idolized them more than anything but am not sure i could say the same for them, what they saw in me was annoying little brother who they had to drag everywhere they went.

Ma sent me to a youth club to keep me out of trouble in the summer with one of my brothers Zeekil(14) while Rashawn(16) went where ever he wanted, most of the time studio with his friends cause he thought he was the man of the house with our dad always away.

At the youth club my two closet friends were Terrell and Montana who unlike me thought of the youth club as heaven because of the variety of girls…Lightskins, brownies, darkskins and even Latinas round here most boys weren’t into white girls. It wasn’t uptight or cocky but this was south london and the attitude of most girls was too much to handle.

Is the merchant of venice anti semitic?

INTRO.What am talking about in this essay is the argument to whether the play ‘The Merchant Of Venice’ is anti-semitic or not. Anti-semitism is discrimination or racism towards jewish people. Anti-semitism didn’t just take place during world war 2 but has been going for a much longer time and still takes place today.

THE TREATMENT OF JEWS.

In the merchant of venice anti-semitism is essentially the core of the play and are many examples of it taking place in venice the treatment… The treatment of jews was bad as they was thought of some sort animals as they had to live in the ghetto away from everyone else in venice almost as if they weren’t human another example of bad treatment to jews in venice was the lack of respect towards them evidence of the disrespect towards them is how it was normal to spat at or even on them just like Antonio did Shylock who is jewish and in the play shylock tells us that Antonio had spat on him when talked about jews being the same as any other human as quoted “You call me misbeliever, cut-throat dog and spit upon my Jewish gabardine.”

DOUBLE STANDARDS.

An example of double standards in the merchant of venice is how when Antonio had not payed his debt to Shylock and in their contract it had said that if Antonio had not payed the debt in due time Shylock would be able to take a pound of his flesh and as Shylock made his way to the judge to seal the deal he was stooped by some Christians and the duke had begged Shylock to have mercy on Antonio as quoted “How shalt thou hope for mercy, rendering none?” and showed that the Christians were being hypocrites by quoting “What judgment shall I dread, doing no wrong? You have among you many a purchased slave,Which, like your asses and your dogs and mules.” What he is saying by quoting this is that how can they not ask him to take the pound of flesh that was agreed to on the contract when they have been buying, selling and trading slave which is essential still taking flesh that does not belong.

THE IDEA OF JEWS.

The idea of jews in Venice in the Shakespearean time was that they were basically inhuman and the people of that time should that that was how they thought of them with they’re words(how they described them). The kind of words that were used to described jews went from dogs, money huggers to pigs and many more an example in the play of these kind of words used about a jew is when Shylock explains to Antonio all the reasons he shouldn’t loan because of what he thinks of him…as quoted “You call me misbeliever, cut-throat dog and spit upon my Jewish gabardine.”

What methods does Shakespeare use to keep the audience interested in his play, Macbeth.

Shakespeare uses five different methods to keep his audience interested in his plays which are Themes, Setting, Dramatic Devices, Character, Language and Narrative Techniques. All of these I will be talking about.

Out of these five methods one of them are themes. The two most important themes are Ambition and Death. The Ambition in Macbeth keeps the audience locked in the play because it shows how far people will go to get what they want or hard they would work to get were they need to be which the audience easily relate to because its a very common human emotion. An example of Ambition in Macbeth is when Macbeth wanted to be king so desperately that killed a very important man in his life (King Duncan). Death in this play engaged the crowd to what was happening because the violence can bring out two emotions which would constantly switch during the play depending on who’s died it also keeps the audience engaged because it makes you want to know whats going to happen next the play. An example of death in Macbeth is when Macbeth kills King Duncan who was sleeping at the time which the audience wouldn’t wouldn’t be happy about because King Duncan had been a good character through the play.

The second method that Shakespeare uses to keep his audience locked in the play are two settings, place and time. Place was important this play because it had to fit in with what was going on during the play to keep the audience locked in with what was going on during the play, for example if it was sunny when a character dies it wouldn’t make to much sense because during a moment like that it would dark and cold because someone dying wouldn’t be a good thing depending on who the character is. It keeps audience locked in because it reflects the mood and the characters thoughts at times. Time also keeps the audience interested because just like place it reflects the mood.(edit)

The third method Shakespeare uses to keep the audience locked in the play is two dramatic devices soliloquys and props. Soliloquys are important in this play because the words in what the character are sayin
